Students Enjoy Motivational Camp at The Holiday Lodge Hotel, Jerudong
Tue, 12 Nov 2013

Primary six students from St. George's School were rewarded with a two-day Motivational Camp at the Holiday Lodge Hotel on 25 and 26 October 2013, with fun-filled learning activities after finishing their gruelling Primary School Assessment Examination (PSR).

The camp was declared open by the President of the School Board of Governors, Bishop Cornelius Sim, and attended by the Chairman of the School Board of Governors, Mr. Anthony Liew, the Principal Mr. Janidi Jingan, the Deputy Principal Mr. Mubarak, Head of Secondary Mdm Chew Lai Kwan, Head of Primary Mdm Alice Ting Ee See and teachers.

The main purpose of organizing this event was not only to establish better relationship among teachers and students but also to prepare students for transition into secondary education and to introduce them to Year 7 curriculum and extra-curricular activities offered by the school.

In his message to the campers, the principal outlined the qualities and strengths of St George's School with its multi-ethnic and multi-cultural blends of students and teachers that have attracted students throughout the years into a melting pot of learning experience, sharing and caring. This has enriched them with a better understanding and tolerance of the diverse cultures, traditions and religious differences of one another and gained them many friends. The vast expertise and skills of the teachers have enabled students to interact well among themselves and with their teachers and to study and work together. Equipped with an all-rounded education, students have achieved good academic results and gone on to hold important positions both in the private and public sectors.

Besides, the pupils also listened to a talk on Financial Literacy by Ms Shavon, Chief Executive Officer of Bru Innov Edu Services, and from which the pupils were taught to do budgeting and money management. The other activities the pupils were exposed to were an inspirational speech, a motivational talk, motivational video clips and team building activities that focused on trusting others, honesty and integrity. Among the presenters were the Head of Primary, Mdm. Alice Ting, Teacher Eugenio Mendoza and Teacher Sheeba Charles.

Parents' Night was the highlight of the camp where both parents and children were introduced to the Year 7 Curriculum by Mdm Chew Lai Kwan. In this talk, the parents were introduced to the guidelines for curriculum and assessment for national education for the 21st Century or the Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad ke-21 for Year 7 and Year 8. The parents in attendance were also briefed on the Student Progress Assessment ( SPA ) Format for Years 7 and 8 which applied to all subjects. An insightful elaboration on each subject, that would help parents to get a better understanding of the SPA, was given.

Clips were also shown on the numerous activities that the secondary school has to offer to all her students and on the continuous staff developments that the school conducts for her staff and teachers in her continuous quest to constantly produce excellent teachers and students.

According to the camp organizer Alice Ting, this was the 1st Motivational Camp organized instead of field trips. She received appreciation and favourable comments from parents, as well as those students who joined the camp. Students expressed their enjoyment in staying at the hotel and fun learning activities organized.

As the camp drew to a close, she felt a great sense of accomplishment due to the success and smooth running of all the scheduled programmes. She gave accolades to the working committee for their teamwork and parents for their cooperation and support. Hopefully, the school will continue to conduct or organize similar events in the years to come.
