Last week, secondary students at St.George’s School took part in a thrilling school oratory competition held in conjunction with the English Week. This captivating competition saw a total of 19 participants from the secondary level.

The event kicked off with a stirring speech from our esteemed principal, Mr. Janidi Jingan, who emphasised the importance of effective communication in the English language. He applauded the participants for their bravery and urged them to take the competition as an opportunity to express their ideas and polish their public speaking skills.

For the lower secondary level, the competition had an open theme. This allowed our students the freedom to explore any topic of their choosing. The first place went to Summer Mikaela Yeo Shuxian of Year 8A. She gave a powerful speech about 'Time.' The second place went to Abigail Calimbas Olayvar of Year 7B. She shared stories about 'My School Life'. Another interesting speech from Ryla Ezy Calimbas Recto of Year 8A about 'Time' came third.

Meanwhile, the upper secondary students explored the theme 'Technology and Education.' Siti Nurmaziah Khalisah bte Hj Mayadi of Year 10B won first place, with a deep and thoughtful speech about how technology is changing how we learn. Also from Year 10B, Jed Ng Xiang Zhe came in second place, while Zyle Marcus Andaya Dizon of Year 11B came in third.

Apart from the main event, the English Week also featured a lively Wordplay contest for Year 8 students. This contest tested their quick thinking and vocabulary skills, providing a fun yet challenging exercise that complemented the more serious competition.

We are indeed proud of all the participants for their outstanding performances and look forward to seeing them utilise the skills they have honed in their future endeavours. We are also grateful to all the teachers and students who supported the event and made it a grand success. We look forward to even more engaging and inspiring events in the future!
