On 23rd April 2026, five students from Year 9B had the exciting opportunity to attend the International Girls in ICT Day event organized by Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) at the Chancellor Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The event was specially held for girls to celebrate their role in technology and inspire more young women to explore ICT.
Throughout the day, the students joined several fun and interactive workshops, which included AI talks on awareness and ethics, a Google Teachable Machine demo, a Vibe Coding workshop, and a Solution Development challenge. These activities gave them a chance to learn how technology can solve real-life problems in creative and practical ways.
The AI awareness and ethics session was especially important, as it showed both the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence. It explained how AI can make tasks faster and easier, but also how it must be used responsibly to avoid issues such as misinformation, privacy concerns, and overdependence on technology.
One of the highlights was the Vibe Coding workshop, where coding felt less like schoolwork and more like bringing ideas to life. It was simple and easy to understand therefore the girls immediately enjoyed their time tinkering around with the coding.
During the Solution Development challenge, the four students created a cooking app for teenagers who struggle with limited ingredients, busy schedules, and tight budgets. The app would suggest easy and affordable recipes using ingredients already at home, making cooking simpler and less stressful. It was a creative idea that showed how technology can make daily life easier.
They also learned from other students’ app presentations, especially those focused on online safety, which highlighted the dangers of the internet such as scams, fake identities, and online predators. It reminded everyone, especially young girls, to stay alert, protect their personal information, and be careful when interacting with strangers online.
Although the school did not place in the Top 5, the students still saw the experience as a big win. They learned new skills, worked as a team, and gained confidence. The event was a meaningful experience that inspired the girls to dream bigger and showed them that women have an important place in the future of technology.
