On Friday morning, January 23rd, the school held its annual CCA Orientation organised by the CCA Department and led by Teacher Sheeba, Head of CCA. Teachers introduced the 17 clubs offered to students from the Primary, and Secondary levels. The session helped students and parents gain a better understanding of each club’s objectives and encourage them to explore new interests.
At 9:00 a.m., the school was honoured to welcome the Brunei Fencing Federation for a special demonstration. The demonstration introduced students to the sport of fencing while also explaining the training venue, basic rules, and how the sport is conducted. Three national fencing athletes then took the stage to deliver an exciting live demonstration, showcasing skill, agility, and discipline.
Students were later invited on stage to try using the fencing gear and experience basic movements under the guidance of the head coach, Coach Rocky. The activity was well received, and the school is pleased to share that fencing may potentially become part of the CCA itinerary this year.
The event also featured inspiring speeches. Coach Rocky, a national coach and a fencing champion since the 1990s, spoke about the development of fencing in Brunei and encouraged students to explore new opportunities. Secretary Ms Amal Nazurah, also from the Brunei Darussalam Fencing Federation, introduced the team and spoke about the federation’s efforts to grow interest in fencing among students. She also highlighted that one of our current students from Year 8A, Chee Zhi Xuan, has already been part of the fencing team for a full season, an encouraging example for others who may wish to explore the sport. We were also moved by a heartfelt sharing from Ms Azriah, an SGS alumnai, who recalled being 14 and sitting in the Parish Hall listening to a similar demonstration by Coach Rocky two decades ago, which sparked her long-lasting interest in the sport.
The orientation day proved to be an engaging and inspiring start to the CCA programme. We look forward to supporting our students as they discover their passions and talents throughout the year.
